Friends,
We have recently learned that both the House Judiciary and House Intelligence Committees will mark up USA PATRIOT Act reauthorization legislation this week. A floor vote in the House is expected the week of July 18th. Now is the time to tell your representative to protect civil liberties!
Some proponents of the PATRIOT Act are already pointing to the terrorist attacks in London as further justification for suspending the protections guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. While we all abhor these acts of terror, neither the recent attacks nor the September 11, 2001, attacks render our Bill of Rights obsolete. Please call, email, and fax your House member as often as possible this week to express your concern about threats to civil liberties (see our talking points below). If your representative voted in favor of Rep. Bernie Sanders' Freedom to Read Amendment to the SSJC Appropriations bill (see vote results at http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2005/roll258.xml), or is a co-sponsor of any liberty-restoring bills (see below), please thank him or her.
Please check the lists below to see if your House member is on either the Judiciary or Intelligence Committee. These representatives in particular need to hear from their constituents. If your House member is not on either of the lists, look up his or her contact information at http://www.house.gov. To send an email, go to http://www.demaction.org/dia/organizations/bordc/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=960.
Talking Points
Urge your representative to:
- restore personal privacy;
- restore due process;
- respect First Amendment rights to assemble and to petition (criticize) the government;
- limit the definition of "terrorism" to violent crimes perpetrated on human civilian targets for political gain;
- prohibit all authorized prisoner abuse;
- restore respect for the rule of law;
- decrease government secrecy; and
- respect the balance of power between the branches of government.
When we learn about the content of the reauthorization bills in the
House and Senate, we will send out more detailed talking points.
