The Maryland General Assembly is considering a bill that will create a blacklist of human rights activists.
The blacklist would consist of individuals, non-government organizations, and businesses that participate in the Boycotts, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, which aims to change Israel’s policies towards the Palestinian people. Individuals and organizations on the blacklist would be barred from state contracts or pension fund investment.
As a domestic civil liberties group, we take no position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or the goals of the Boycotts, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. But we do defend the right to participate in a boycott. The Supreme Court has ruled that boycotts for political, social, and economic change are political speech and one cannot be denied a public benefit, like a contract, due to their political speech.
McCarthyism has no place in Maryland. Write to your legislator today and tell them that to keep free speech in the free state*.
