Jerry Koch, a 24 year old Brooklyn anarchist, has been in jail since May 21, 2013 because he refuses to testify before a grand jury purportedly investigating an incident at a Times Square armed services recruiting center in 2008. A small bomb went off in the middle of the night, causing property damage. As with all the grand jury stories we bring you, the person/people in jail aren’t suspected of involvement with the crime. Jerry has been in jail for over 7 months and recently filed a Grumbles motion asking a judge to release him from jail because he will never agree to testify (Jerry’s time in jail is not supposed to be punishment, it’s supposed to be coercive, to force him to testify). In a statement from prison last month, Jerry talked about his commitment to resist:
My own resistance is far from unique. It is found in those who have always said NO to those in power. My refusal to cooperate is my contribution to this tradition of defiance to arbitrary and repressive power. I will not cooperate. I will not be institutionalized. No compromise in this. I will not sacrifice my dignity in order to leave this place, and that’s not nothing.
If the judge denies his request, Jerry could be held for up to 18 months. Public support might help convince the judge that Jerry is determined not to testify, so you are encouraged to sign this change.org petition. and to send a note to Jerry in prison: Gerald Koch #68631-054 MCC New York Metropolitan Correctional Center 150 Park Row New York, NY 10007
