QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK OF YOUR CAMPUS AUTHORITIES

To the Library:

  1. Does the library maintain users’ borrowing records after a book has been returned?

  2. Is it correct that under the USA PATRIOT Act, federal investigators can demand to review students’ borrowing records?

  3. Can the library notify students that their records have been investigated?

  4. Is the school or any law enforcement agency monitoring e-mail transmissions and Internet usage? Are they required by a privacy policy to inform you if your e-mail transmissions are being monitored?

To the Campus Police:

  1. Are any campus police employed by the FBI?

  2. Is our police force participating with the FBI on Joint Task Forces on Terrorism?

  3. Would campus police provide support to the FBI to attend religious and political meetings or activities on campus?

  4. Have any students or faculty been questioned by campus police or the FBI regarding their political or religious beliefs?

  5. Have any individuals on campus been questioned by campus police or federal investigators by virtue of their racial, ethnic, or religious background?

To the Administration:

  1. What is the privacy policy at your school? What information does the university have the power to collect and share with other governmental or private entities?

  2. Would the university inform students if their records were turned over to the FBI or other law enforcement agency?

  3. Has the school compiled a database of international students’ information to share with the INS? What are they doing with that information, and how are they making sure that information is protected?

  4. Were any students denied visas to return to school from their countries?

  5. How has the college assisted international students in complying with new or special INS requirements?

  6. Is the school or any law enforcement agency monitoring e-mail transmissions and Internet usage? Is the school required by a privacy policy to inform you if your e-mail transmissions are being monitored?

  7. Have campus bookstores and shops been required to turn over purchase records to the FBI or other law enforcement agency?
